Why the name?
Founded by Chism Cooper Fugitt in the early 1850s, Galt started as a settlement that was initially named Liberty. In the early days, it was a rest stop for horse-drawn freight haulers who picked up supplies from Sun Franciso’s dock and delivered them to Thornton (formerly called New Hope Landing).
Then in 1861, while Galt was still part of a federal land grant called Chabolla Grant, it was used as a stagecoach stop for a train route that brought people from Stockton to Sacramento.
Later on, John McFarland, a wealthy rancher and builder renamed the city and called it Galt, after a town in Ontario, Canada. He also built some of the first brick buildings in the area, including the one at 4th and B streets that’s still used today.
